To a new year
Before we rub off our soles on the welcome mat of December to walk clean into this new year, we need to remember what we fought for, what we fought against. Read with us, will you?
I woke up alone in my bed again, the other side so immaculately clean, perhaps the other person woke up early in the morning and patted the sheets smooth before they left. I wake up with creases on my own. I know no other way to write of loss except knowing it’s morning and so many eyes were robbed off this sight my eyes flinch against. It's close to eight am, I am not sure what time this reaches you. In a way, we're in two separate time frames hoping to touch somewhere in between these words. When I write how Ocean Vuong said, 'Don't we touch each other just to prove we are still here?', I'm reaching out to you. Tell me how you skipped your breakfast again, and you've barely had a glass of water since night, and how the earth is going to complete another revolution beneath your toes but you are sitting with your legs crouched confused how to feel.
Even as we're moving forward, I'm very aware of all the headlines newspapers have so easily swallowed and forgotten. It's easier to place our hunger in accordance with what is to come than what we've lost. But when Lucille Clifton wrote, 'i am running into a new year/and the old years blow back/like a wind', and when Markus Zusak wrote, 'It helps me to forget. But I'm not sure I really want to', 2021 comes alive again. And before we rub off our soles on the welcome mat of December to walk clean into this new year, we need to remember what we fought for, what we fought against. Read with us, will you?
One art by Elizabeth Bishop
The art of losing isn’t hard to master; so many things seem filled with the intent to be lost that their loss is no disaster. Lose something every day. Accept the fluster of lost door keys, the hour badly spent. The art of losing isn’t hard to master. Then practice losing farther, losing faster: places, and names, and where it was you meant to travel. None of these will bring disaster. I lost my mother’s watch. And look! my last, or next-to-last, of three loved houses went. The art of losing isn’t hard to master. I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster, some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent. I miss them, but it wasn’t a disaster. —Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture I love) I shan’t have lied. It’s evident the art of losing’s not too hard to master though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster.
I am reminded of the stubborn smell of onion on fingers, how its odour stays crouched between your fingers even after washing them twice and how pouring the hands in roses and jasmines and neem and lemons is to no avail. And at an uneventful hour in the night, it's gone. It's gone but now we remember it too well to let go. Much alike, a bigger half of last year went by washing off losses, and yet never being able to forget their merciless touch. People who have shared bed with loss this year will walk out of it differently - "different as the animal with the touch of human hands about him when he returns to the herd" (The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath) For those, I quote Naomi Shahib Nye,
"Where there was something and suddenly isn’t, an absence shouts, celebrates, leaves a space. I begin again with the smallest numbers."
And so you do, begin with what still follows, as Cassandra Clare so rightfully put, ' We are all the pieces of what we remember. We hold in ourselves the hopes and fears of those who love us. As long as there is love and memory, there is no true loss.'
I want to remember this year the same way I'll talk of it to a five-year-old, to remind him of faith, kindness and humanity in times of turmoil. Of people coming together in their fight for survival, of hope being just as an effective cure. The distance between us stitched together, wound by wound, scar by scar. If you ask me, I don't want to start anew, I want to take this with me, I want to take you with me. No matter how many doors between us, we lived through this together, and I don't know if it has made us stronger or weaker, but I can say for a fact it has made both of us more human, we've allowed things to hurt us but we've also fostered healing. The earth keeps going around unconscious of how much changes in this course, and perhaps, it says to the axis, 'I have to keep going on.'
If you asked me what my new year resolution is, I'd probably laugh into your face and I think that's all I really want, to make space for laughter in my life, to make space for love and happiness and warmth and kindness, that sadness, even when it visits, realises that it doesn't have a bed to stay the night. I don't even think it's an appropriate resolution by definition, but it's a way of life, and what is a new year if not an invitation to go on living.
Here are a few poems as a toast to this occasion, consider them as fireworks through your window <3
What the Last Evening Will Be Like by Edward Hirsch
You're sitting at a small bay window in an empty café by the sea. It's nightfall, and the owner is locking up, though you're still hunched over the radiator, which is slowly losing warmth. Now you're walking down to the shore to watch the last blues fading on the waves. You've lived in small houses, tight spaces— the walls around you kept closing in— but the sea and the sky were also yours. No one else is around to drink with you from the watery fog, shadowy depths. You're alone with the whirling cosmos. Goodbye, love, far away, in a warm place. Night is endless here, silence infinite.
Rain, New Year's Eve by Maggie Smith
The rain is a broken piano, playing the same note over and over. My five-year-old said that. Already she knows loving the world means loving the wobbles you can't shim, the creaks you can't oil silent—the jerry-rigged parts, MacGyvered with twine and chewing gum. Let me love the cold rain's plinking. Let me love the world the way I love my young son, not only when he cups my face in his sticky hands, but when, roughhousing, he accidentally splits my lip. Let me love the world like a mother. Let me be tender when it lets me down. Let me listen to the rain's one note and hear a beginner's song.
